Tether issues USDT on many blockchains. On Tron it is a TRC-20 token. On Ethereum it is an ERC-20 token. Both are real USDT. But they live on separate chains, and a transfer made on one chain never arrives on the other.
The short answer
Use the network the receiver asks for. If you send to a Tron address, you send USDT on Tron. If you send to an Ethereum address, you send USDT on Ethereum. No version of USDT works on both.
Then check how you will pay the fee. On Tron, fees are paid with TRX or with resources you get by staking TRX. On Ethereum, fees are paid in ETH. If your address holds only USDT, you usually cannot send it until you add TRX or ETH.
Beyond that, pick a network your wallet supports and whose fee coin you already hold. If your USDT sits on Ethereum and the receiver wants Tron, a USDT ERC-20 to TRC-20 swap moves it across.
Same token, two separate blockchains
TRC-20 is the token standard on Tron. Tron’s developer docs describe it as compatible with Ethereum’s ERC-20 at the interface level. So USDT behaves in a similar way on both chains.
The two versions are still separate. Each one is a smart contract on its own blockchain, and each chain keeps its own record of balances. Tether lists one USDT contract for each network on its supported protocols page.

These two addresses are token contracts, not wallets. Never send USDT to them. Tokens sent to a contract that cannot handle them can be lost for good.
Addresses: T on Tron, 0x on Ethereum
A Tron address in its usual form has 34 characters and starts with T. It uses Base58Check encoding, which includes a checksum.
An Ethereum address has 42 characters: 0x followed by 40 hexadecimal characters. Many wallets show it in mixed case. That mixed case is a checksum defined in EIP-55, and it catches almost every typo. An address written in all lowercase has no such check, so compare the full address with care.
Many other networks use the same 0x format. A wallet with a recovery phrase shows the same 0x address on each of them. So a 0x address does not tell you the network. Always check the network name as well.
How each network charges for a transfer
The network itself never takes its fee in USDT. Fee levels change, so this guide explains how fees work, not what they cost. Your wallet shows the current fee before you confirm.
Tron: bandwidth and energy
Every Tron transaction uses bandwidth, measured by its size in bytes. A smart contract call also uses energy. A USDT transfer is a smart contract call, so it needs both.
- Each account gets a small free bandwidth quota over a rolling 24 hours.
- Energy has no free quota.
- You can get both resources by staking TRX.
- If your staked resources and the free quota do not cover a transfer, the network burns TRX from your balance to pay.
So keep some TRX in any Tron address that holds USDT. A new Tron address is activated when it first receives TRX or a TRC-10 token from an existing account. Sending TRX to a new address first activates it and gives it TRX for fees.
Ethereum: gas in ETH
On Ethereum, every transaction pays gas, and gas can only be paid in ETH. The price of each unit is quoted in gwei, which is one billionth of an ETH. The price has two parts: a base fee, which is burned, and a tip for the validator. The base fee goes up when blocks are fuller than their target and down when they are emptier.
If a transaction runs out of gas, Ethereum reverts it. The USDT does not move, but the gas already used is still paid. Leave the gas limit your wallet suggests unless you know why to change it.
On both networks, the fee comes from the work the transfer needs. It is not a share of the amount you send. Some wallets offer to cover the network fee and charge you in USDT instead. The network is still paid in TRX or ETH, so read your wallet’s terms before you rely on this.
Speed and finality
Tron produces a block about every 3 seconds. Twenty-seven super representatives take turns to produce them. A block is final, which Tron calls solidified, once at least 19 of them have produced a block at that height or later. That usually takes about one minute.
Ethereum has a slot every 12 seconds. Blocks become final through checkpoints that validators vote on. Ethereum.org says this currently takes about 15 minutes.

Tether can freeze USDT on both networks
Tether issues USDT and controls its contracts. Its terms allow it to freeze Tether tokens and to blacklist addresses that hold them. It may do this when it suspects prohibited use, when the law requires it, or when it decides it is prudent.
The contracts reflect this. The USDT contracts on Tron and on Ethereum both include functions to add an address to a blacklist and to destroy the tokens held there. On both chains, the transfer functions refuse to move USDT out of a blacklisted address. Freezes do happen. In April 2026 Tether announced a freeze made together with OFAC and US law enforcement.
This risk comes from the issuer, so it is the same on TRC-20 and ERC-20.

How to tell which USDT you hold
- Look at the network label. Check which network your wallet or account lists next to the balance. Look for Tron or TRC-20, or Ethereum or ERC-20.
- Look at your address. A receiving address that starts with T is on Tron. One that starts with 0x is on Ethereum or another EVM network, so the label still matters.
- Open a past transfer on a block explorer. Paste the transaction ID into Tronscan or Etherscan. The page shows which token contract moved the funds. Compare it with the contract Tether lists.
In the ERC-20 standard, which TRC-20 follows, a token’s name and symbol are optional values that the contract itself returns. So any contract can call its token USDT. If the contract does not match Tether’s list, the token is not USDT, whatever name your wallet shows. What happens if you send on the wrong network
A Tron address is not a valid Ethereum address, and the reverse is also true. So the common mistakes happen elsewhere.
- The wrong network in a withdrawal form. Exchange accounts often offer USDT on several networks. If you pick another EVM network for a 0x address that expects Ethereum, the transfer never reaches Ethereum.
- The wrong network in your wallet. A wallet set to another EVM network sends there, even though the address looks right.
What happens next depends on who controls the receiving address. If it is your own wallet with a recovery phrase and the mistake was between EVM networks, the tokens are not lost. Your recovery phrase controls the same address on the other network. Switch your wallet to that network to see them. If the address belongs to a service, contact that service first. Only it can move the tokens, and it may not be able to help.
Tether’s terms say that once you send tokens to an address, you accept the risk of losing them. Tether may try to recover tokens in some specific cases that it chooses. You must become a verified Tether user, Tether charges a fee, and a recovery is not guaranteed.
For a swap here, the deposit address accepts one coin on one network. USDT sent on another network does not reach the swap. Contact support with your order ID. A return is not guaranteed.
Fake USDT and flash offers
Tether’s private keys control USDT issuance, and real USDT comes only from the contracts Tether lists. But anyone can deploy a token contract and give it the name USDT. A wallet may show that token under the same name.
You may see offers for “flash USDT”. They claim that software can make USDT appear in a wallet. That is not how USDT is created.
Three habits help.
- When someone pays you in USDT, open the transaction on Tronscan or Etherscan. Check the token contract before you send anything in return.
- Treat any request to pay a fee to “unlock” USDT as a warning sign. Activating a Tron address only needs TRX or a TRC-10 token sent to it.
- Never share your recovery phrase. To receive USDT, you only share your address.
Moving USDT between the two networks
A transfer cannot cross from Tron to Ethereum on its own. To change networks, you swap one version for the other. If your USDT sits on Ethereum and the receiver wants Tron, use the swap from Ethereum USDT to Tron USDT mentioned above. You send USDT on Ethereum and receive USDT at your Tron address. You need ETH to send the deposit, and later TRX to move the USDT on Tron.

Checklist before you send
- The network in your wallet or withdrawal form matches the receiving address.
- The address starts with T for Tron or 0x for Ethereum.
- You checked the full address against the one the receiver gave you, not only the first and last characters.
- The token contract matches the one Tether lists.
- The sending address holds TRX or ETH to pay the fee.
- If you send from an exchange account, you added a refund address from a wallet you control.
