XMR to BTC: swap Monero to Bitcoin with no KYC
On , our floating quote for 1 XMR was 0.006556 BTC after a 0.0000039 BTC payout fee.
Rate before the payout fee: 1 XMR ≈ 0.00656 BTC (our calculation from that quote).
No account and no ID to start. Some swaps are held for checks, and residents of some countries may be asked to verify. How screening works
Before you swap
Only your unlocked XMR can be sent, so check your balance before you start. Keep the transaction ID and the sending wallet, because a Monero deposit that is held for checks can need a spend proof. Your XMR goes to an address controlled by our liquidity partner until your BTC is sent. A floating quote can change before your deposit confirms.

Why people swap Monero to Bitcoin
From a private ledger to a public one
People make this swap when the next wallet or service they use takes Bitcoin and not Monero. Others hold both coins and shift value between them from time to time.
The coins change more than their ticker on the way. On Monero, payments are private by default, as our Monero (XMR) coin page explains. The BTC payout is an ordinary Bitcoin transaction. It stays on a public record for good, and anyone who knows the address can follow it and every later move from it. Records kept by the services you use can also be matched by amount and time, as our guide Is Monero traceable? explains.
Pick the payout address with care
Bitcoin.org advises a new address for each payment you receive. Ask your wallet for a fresh receive address and use it only for this swap. That keeps the payout apart from coins you received before.
Copy the address from your wallet’s receive screen, then compare the first and last characters after you paste. Our Bitcoin (BTC) coin page lists the address types. Taproot addresses, which start with bc1p, are the newest. The swap form accepts them, but some older wallets cannot pay them. A Lightning invoice will not work either, because the payout is an on-chain transaction. A Bitcoin payment cannot be reversed. Only the owner of the receiving address can send the coins back.
If the swap is held
After you send, our liquidity partner holds the XMR until the BTC goes out. The deposit is credited once it has the Monero confirmations the partner requires. On a floating quote, the final rate is set at that moment, so the BTC can land a little above or below the estimate.
Screening can also hold a swap. A Monero sender may then be asked for a spend proof, as Risk and screening describes. This is a signature that shows you created the transaction. The command line wallet makes one with get_spend_proof and the transaction ID. It needs the private spend key, so only the wallet that sent the XMR can make it. Keep the transaction ID and that wallet until the swap is done. XMR withdrawn from an exchange account leaves you without this proof.
For the opposite trip, the Bitcoin to Monero swap page has its own notes.
Sending XMR and receiving BTC
Sending XMR (Monero)
Send XMR from your Monero wallet to the deposit address of your order, in one transaction. Your wallet must be fully synced and have enough unlocked balance. A Monero transaction cannot be reversed once it is in a block, so check the address first.
- Only unlocked XMR can be sent. XMR you received less than 10 blocks ago is still locked. That is about 20 minutes.
- The receiver of a Monero payment cannot see the address it came from. A refund needs an address from you, so add a refund address you control. This matters most when you send from an exchange account.
Receiving BTC (Bitcoin)
Give a Bitcoin address from a wallet you control. It can start with 1, 3, bc1q or bc1p. A BTC payout does not use a memo or tag, so the address is all you need. Your BTC arrives on the Bitcoin network only.
- If you receive to an exchange account, check that its deposit page says BTC on the Bitcoin network. No memo or tag is needed.
- If the BTC does not show yet, copy the payout transaction ID from your order page and look it up in a block explorer. If it is confirmed there, let your wallet finish syncing.
XMR to BTC questions
Questions about Monero itself, such as legality and delistings, are answered in our Monero (XMR) coin guide
Why can I not send my whole XMR balance?
Part of it is probably still locked. Your wallet shows a total balance and an unlocked balance, and only the unlocked part can be sent. New incoming coins unlock after 10 confirmations. Change from a recent payment can also stay locked for a while. Wait until the two numbers match.
Which Bitcoin address should I give for the payout?
A new receive address from a Bitcoin wallet you control. Bitcoin.org advises a fresh address for each payment you receive, so this payout is not tied to coins you got before. Copy it from the receive screen of your wallet.
My wallet gives me an address that starts with bc1p. Can I use it?
Yes. An address that starts with bc1p is a Taproot address, a Bitcoin format defined in BIP 350, and the swap form accepts it. Some older wallets cannot send to these addresses. If you plan to share the same address with such a wallet later, ask your wallet for an address that starts with bc1q instead.
Can I receive the BTC in a Lightning wallet?
Only at an on-chain Bitcoin address. The payout is a regular transaction on the Bitcoin blockchain. Lightning payments are settled off the blockchain, so a Lightning invoice cannot receive it. If your wallet can also receive on-chain, give the on-chain address it shows.
What is a spend proof, and when would I need one?
It is a signature made with the private spend key of the wallet that sent a Monero payment. It shows that you created that transaction. If a swap is held for checks, you may be asked for one. In the command line wallet, the command is get_spend_proof followed by the transaction ID.
Can I still give a spend proof if I send the XMR from an exchange account?
No. Only the wallet that holds the private spend key can make one, and for an exchange account the exchange holds that key. If such a swap is held for checks, you have no proof of your own to show.
Will I have to verify if my XMR to BTC swap is held?
You start with no account and no ID. If screening holds the swap, you may be asked to verify and to give a spend proof for the XMR you sent. The section If the swap is held explains how.
