USDT TRC-20 or ERC-20: which do you hold
USDT (TRC-20) lives on Tron and USDT (ERC-20) lives on Ethereum. They come from the same issuer, but a wallet treats them as different assets, and a transfer made on one network stays there. Our guide to USDT on TRC-20 and ERC-20 shows three ways to tell which one you hold.
Fees are paid in TRX or ETH
USDT itself does not pay for a transfer. The network charges its fee in its own coin.
On Tron, a USDT transfer is a smart contract call. It uses two resources, bandwidth and energy. You get both by staking TRX. Another account can also delegate them to you. Each account gets a small free bandwidth quota over a rolling 24 hours. Energy has no free quota. When your resources do not cover a transfer, the network burns TRX from your address. So keep some TRX next to your USDT. A new Tron address becomes active when it receives TRX or a TRC-10 token. Sending TRX to it first also gives you coins for fees.
On Ethereum, every transfer pays gas in ETH. This includes ERC-20 token transfers. Keep some ETH in the wallet you send from. If a transfer runs out of gas, it fails, and you still pay for the gas.

Tether can freeze USDT
Tether issues USDT through its token contracts. Its terms allow it to freeze Tether tokens and to blacklist addresses that hold them.
The contracts reflect this. Both the Tron and the Ethereum USDT contracts include functions to add an address to a blacklist and to destroy the tokens held there. On Ethereum, the contract refuses transfers from a blacklisted address. In April 2026, Tether announced a freeze made with U.S. law enforcement and OFAC. OFAC is the U.S. office that enforces sanctions.
For you, this means a USDT balance depends on the issuer as well as the network. Coins you receive from a swap come from our liquidity partner. Fake USDT and “flash” offers
A token called USDT is only real if it comes from the contract Tether lists, and “flash USDT” is a fake token made to look like it. Recent Tether context
Tether stopped issuing and redeeming USDT on Omni Layer, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Kusama, EOS and Algorand. Tokens on those chains can still move between wallets. Tron and Ethereum are still on Tether's list of supported networks.
Sending and receiving USDT
USDT (TRC-20)
Send USDT on the Tron network only. Your wallet or exchange must show Tron or TRC-20 as the network. The sending address also needs TRX, because Tron charges for token transfers in energy and bandwidth, not in USDT. You receive USDT (TRC-20) at a Tron address that starts with T. Use an address from a wallet that shows Tron tokens. Tron transfers have no memo field, so none is needed. The sender pays the transfer cost, so you need no TRX to receive USDT. You will need TRX to send it later.
- Pick Tron (TRC-20) in your wallet or in the exchange withdrawal form. USDT sent on another network does not reach a Tron deposit address.
- Keep some TRX in the sending address. A USDT transfer uses energy, and energy has no free quota. Without energy or TRX to burn, the transfer cannot be paid.
- Check the deposit address before you confirm. A Tron address has 34 characters and starts with T. Compare the full address with the one on your order page, not only the first and last characters.
- Send only to the deposit address shown for your swap. Never send to the USDT token contract, TR7NHqjeKQxGTCi8q8ZY4pL8otSzgjLj6t. It is a contract, not a wallet. Tokens sent to a contract that cannot handle them can be lost.
- Send real USDT. The token in your wallet must use the contract Tether lists for Tron. A token called USDT from any other contract is not USDT.
- If you send from an exchange account, add a refund address that you control. A refund to an exchange deposit address may not reach you.
- Give a Tron address that you control. Check that it starts with T and has 34 characters.
- Do not give the USDT token contract address or an address that starts with 0x. Neither can receive USDT on Tron for you.
- Add some TRX to the receiving address if you plan to move the USDT later. A new Tron address becomes active when it receives TRX or a TRC-10 token. USDT is a TRC-20 token, so send TRX to the address as well.
- If the payout shows on Tronscan but not in your wallet, check that your wallet shows TRC-20 tokens and lists USDT with the contract Tether publishes.
- If an exchange account receives the USDT, check that it accepts USDT on Tron (TRC-20) at that address.
USDT (ERC-20)
Send USDT on Ethereum mainnet only. Your wallet or exchange must show Ethereum or ERC-20 as the network. The sending wallet also needs ETH, because every transfer on Ethereum pays gas in ETH, including token transfers. You receive USDT (ERC-20) at an Ethereum address that starts with 0x. Use a regular wallet address that you control. Ethereum transfers have no memo field, so none is needed. To move the USDT later, that wallet will need ETH for gas.
- Pick Ethereum (ERC-20) in your wallet or in the exchange withdrawal form. Other EVM networks use the same address format, but USDT sent on them stays on those networks and does not reach this deposit.
- Keep some ETH in the sending wallet to pay gas. If a transfer runs out of gas, it fails, and you still pay for the gas.
- Check the deposit address before you confirm. An Ethereum address has 42 characters and starts with 0x. Compare the full address with the one on your order page. A mixed-case address carries an EIP-55 checksum. Wallets that check it catch almost every typo.
- Send only to the deposit address shown for your swap. Never send to the USDT token contract, 0xdAC17F958D2ee523a2206206994597C13D831ec7. Tokens sent to a contract that cannot handle them can be lost for good.
- Send real USDT. The token in your wallet must use the contract Tether lists for Ethereum. A token called USDT from any other contract is not USDT.
- If you send from an exchange account, add a refund address that you control. A refund to an exchange deposit address may not reach you.
- Give an Ethereum address from a wallet you control. Do not give the USDT token contract address or a Tron address.
- A wallet shows the same 0x address on other EVM networks, but the balances are separate. When you look for the USDT, make sure your wallet is set to Ethereum mainnet.

How do I know if my USDT is TRC-20 or ERC-20?
Check the network name next to the balance in your wallet or exchange account. Then look at your receiving address. A Tron address starts with T. An Ethereum address starts with 0x. You can also open a past deposit on Tronscan or Etherscan. The token contract shown there tells you which USDT it is.
Can I send USDT TRC-20 to an ERC-20 address?
No. A Tron transfer can only go to a Tron address. An Ethereum address starts with 0x and is not a valid Tron address. To move USDT from Tron to Ethereum, you swap USDT (TRC-20) for USDT (ERC-20) and receive it at your Ethereum address.
Why do I need TRX to send USDT on Tron?
A USDT transfer on Tron is a smart contract call. It uses energy and bandwidth. You get these by staking TRX, or another account can delegate them to you. If your resources do not cover the transfer, the network burns TRX from your address to pay. Energy has no free quota. So an address with USDT but no TRX and no energy cannot send it.
Can Tether freeze USDT?
Yes. Tether's terms allow it to freeze Tether tokens and to blacklist addresses that hold them. The USDT contracts on Tron and Ethereum both include a blacklist function. On Ethereum, the contract blocks transfers from a blacklisted address. Tether has announced freezes made with law enforcement.
What is flash USDT?
Flash USDT is a name used in scams for fake USDT. A flash token may show up in a wallet and then disappear. It is not USDT. Only tokens from the contracts on Tether's website are USDT. A token with the same name from another contract is not USDT. Check the contract on Tronscan or Etherscan before you accept a payment.
