What ETH is and how Ethereum runs
ETH is the native coin of Ethereum. Ethereum mainnet went live on July 30, 2015. You need ETH to pay for every transaction on the network. Validators also stake ETH to secure the chain.
Ethereum works with accounts. Each address has one balance, and a transfer moves value from one account to another. There are two kinds of account. A regular account is controlled by whoever holds its private key, and it can start transactions. A contract account is controlled by code. It has no private key, and it only acts when a transaction reaches it.
Since September 15, 2022, Ethereum runs on proof of stake. Time is split into slots of 12 seconds. A validator can add one block in each slot, so a new block usually comes every 12 seconds. Some slots stay empty when a validator is offline. Blocks become final through checkpoints, and this takes about 15 minutes. After that, a block could only change through a very costly attack on the network.
ETH has no fixed supply cap. New ETH goes to validators at a rate set by the protocol. The base fee of every transaction is burned. So the supply can rise or fall, depending on how busy the network is.
Ethereum is a public ledger. Addresses, amounts and history can be seen by anyone on a block explorer. Swapping ETH does not change that history.
Ethereum addresses and the EIP-55 checksum
An Ethereum address is the last 20 bytes of a hash of your public key. It is written as 0x followed by 40 hexadecimal characters, so it is 42 characters long.
Plain hexadecimal has no built-in error check. EIP-55 adds one through the case of the letters. Some letters are upper case and some are lower case, based on a hash of the address. A wallet that checks this can catch almost every typo. An address written all in lower case is still valid, but it carries no checksum. If you paste one, compare it with care.
Our form takes the full 0x address. It does not take names that end in .eth. Look up the address the name points to, and paste that instead.
Look-alike addresses are a known scam on Ethereum. A scammer sends a tiny or zero-value transfer from an address that shares the first and last characters with one you use. It then sits in your wallet history. Copy the deposit address from your order page, never from your history, and check every character.
Mainnet, layer 2 networks and tokens
This page covers ETH on Ethereum mainnet only. Layer 2 networks settle their transactions on Ethereum, but each one is a separate blockchain. ETH on a layer 2 is a balance on that layer 2, not on mainnet.
The same wallet usually shows the same 0x address on mainnet and on other EVM networks. The balances are still separate. If you send on the wrong network, the coins stay on that network. You can often see them by switching your wallet to that network, if you control the key. A deposit to your order on the wrong network is not processed automatically. Recovery is sometimes possible but not guaranteed.
ERC-20 is the standard for fungible tokens on Ethereum. USDT on Ethereum is an ERC-20 token. ETH came before the standard, so ETH itself is not an ERC-20 token. Every token transfer still pays its gas in ETH, so a regular wallet with tokens and no ETH cannot move them. Gas prices are quoted in gwei, and one gwei is one billionth of an ETH. If a transaction runs out of gas partway, its changes are undone, but the gas is still used.
Sending ETH from an exchange or a smart contract wallet
You can start a swap with ETH that sits on an exchange account. Pick Ethereum as the withdrawal network, not a layer 2. Add a refund address that you control. If a swap fails, a refund to the exchange’s sending address may not reach you.
Smart contract wallets need more care. Only a regular account can start a transaction. When a contract moves ETH, the transfer happens inside another transaction. A block explorer lists it as an internal transaction under that transaction’s hash. Deposits sent from smart contracts are not processed automatically, so send your ETH from a regular wallet. Since the Pectra upgrade on May 7, 2025, a regular account can also run contract code through EIP-7702. Some wallets use this for batched or sponsored transactions. A batched transfer is made by contract code, so it also shows as an internal transaction. For your deposit, send a plain ETH transfer, not a batch.
When you receive ETH, give a regular address. Never give a token contract address. A transfer to a contract runs that contract’s code, and coins sent to a contract that cannot handle them may not be recoverable.
Your ETH deposit goes to an address controlled by our liquidity partner until your new coins are sent. A floating quote can change before your deposit confirms, and a swap can be held for checks. Send ETH on Ethereum mainnet, in one transaction, to the deposit address of your order. Check the network in your wallet first. The same 0x address also exists on layer 2 networks, but those are different networks. Give an Ethereum address that you control. It starts with 0x and has 42 characters. ETH arrives on Ethereum mainnet only. Your wallet must show Ethereum mainnet to see it.
- Choose Ethereum mainnet in your wallet or exchange. Do not pick a layer 2 network, even if the address looks the same.
- Keep extra ETH for gas. The fee is paid in ETH on top of the amount you send.
- Send a plain transfer from a regular wallet. Deposits sent from smart contracts, including batched transfers, are not processed automatically.
- If you send from an exchange account, add a refund address that you control. A refund to the exchange's sending address may not reach you.
- Copy the deposit address from your order page, never from your wallet history. Scam addresses can share the first and last characters with a real one, so check the full address. A final Ethereum transfer cannot be undone.
- No memo or tag is needed. Ethereum transfers do not have one.
- Paste the full 0x address. The form does not take names that end in .eth.
- Use a regular wallet address, never a token contract address. A transfer to a contract runs its code, so use a smart contract wallet only if it accepts plain ETH transfers.
- If you receive to an exchange account, check that its deposit page says ETH on Ethereum. No memo or tag is needed.
- If the ETH does not show yet, switch your wallet to Ethereum mainnet. Then look up your address on a block explorer.

How do I swap ETH with no KYC?

Is ERC-20 the same as the Ethereum network?
No. ERC-20 is a token standard on Ethereum, not a network of its own. Some wallets and exchanges label the Ethereum network as ERC-20. Check that the network name says Ethereum before you send. ETH itself is the native coin. It came before the ERC-20 standard and is not an ERC-20 token. Every ERC-20 transfer still pays its gas in ETH.
How long does it take to send ETH?
Ethereum has a slot every 12 seconds, and each slot can hold one block. A transfer is in a block once a validator includes it. A block is final after about 15 minutes. Our partner decides when your deposit is credited, and your order page shows the progress.
What does an Ethereum address look like?
It starts with 0x and has 40 more characters, 42 in total. The characters are the digits 0 to 9 and the letters a to f. Mixed upper and lower case is a checksum from EIP-55. It helps wallets catch a typo.
Can I send ETH to a Bitcoin address?
No. Bitcoin and Ethereum are separate networks, and a Bitcoin address does not work on Ethereum. To get BTC for your ETH, swap ETH to BTC and give a Bitcoin address as the receiving address.
What happens if I send ETH on the wrong network?
The coins stay on the network you used, even if the address looks the same. If you control the key, switch your wallet to that network to see them. A deposit to your order on the wrong network is not processed automatically. Recovery is sometimes possible but not guaranteed, and a recovery fee may apply.
Why do I need ETH to pay gas?
Gas measures the work a transaction needs. Ethereum takes its fees only in ETH, priced in gwei, which is one billionth of an ETH. The base fee is burned. This is why a regular wallet that holds only tokens cannot send them until it also holds some ETH. Some smart wallets let another party pay the gas for you.
Can I send ETH from an exchange account or a smart contract wallet?
From an exchange account, yes, if the exchange sends on Ethereum mainnet. Add a refund address that you control, because a refund to the exchange may not reach you. Deposits sent from smart contracts are not processed automatically, so send from a regular wallet.
